Welcome to the Literacy page for Lochgelly High School!
What is literacy?
In the 21st century, literacy has to take account of new technologies and is therefore defined within Curriculum for Excellence as:
“the set of skills which allows an individual to engage fully in society and in learning, through the different forms of language, and the range of texts, which society values and finds useful.” (Principles and practice: Literacy across learning, 2009).
This means that all of our students should be able to:
- communicate effectively face-to-face (talking and listening)
- communicate effectively in writing
- Read, not only for information also to be able to work out if and when people are aiming to persuade or influence them and of course, for pleasure
What do we believe?
- Literacy is a right for all students
- The responsibility for the development of literacy is at a whole school level
- Literacy should be developed in all areas of the curriculum
What is our goal?
At Lochgelly, we aim to provide a supportive, stimulating and secure environment where young people are encouraged to express themselves in a variety of ways and where their contributions are valued. We will overcome barriers that may impact upon literacy and raise attainment for all.
Literacy across learning – what is this?
Literacy is essential in all areas of learning, as it allows young people to access the whole school curriculum. Being literate also increases opportunities for our students outside of school, helping our students to become Independent Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors.
Having skills and confidence in literacy is necessary for progress in all areas of the curriculum. Because of this, all teachers have a responsibility for literacy development.
Literacy experiences and outcomes should be used in all subjects to help promote the development of Talk/Listening, Reading and Writing.
